Course Information
The NSW Heavy Rigid licence allows you to drive any vehicle with up to 3 axles.
All our courses are designed to prepare candidates with the skills and knowledge to operate heavy vehicles with confidence. HVCBA The Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment program is run between NSW Roads & Maritime Services and Registered Training Organisations. Wise Driving School is an RTO. To check if your driving school is an accredited RTO, you can check here. https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/business-industry/heavy-vehicles/licence/registered-training-organisations.html The program consists of criteria skills that are outlined HVCBA Guidebook. You should receive a hard copy after your DKT. In order to complete the course and obtain the licence, candidates need to sucessfully pass the Final Competency Assessment (FCA). The marking criteria can be found in the guide book. |

Answer to question 0
What is the Road-ranger? Should I apply for it?
There are two different types of licence types, these are: “Automatic/Synchromesh” such as an Eaton Gearbox, which is found to be more often fitted to European Trucks. The synchromesh drives similarly to a car's manual gearbox.
If you do your test in automatic, your licence will still cover syncromesh manual.
“Manual/Constant Mesh” gearboxes such as the “Roadranger” require the gear changing technique known as “Double declutching”. This is questionably more challenging to participants who only drive manual car gearboxes and have no prior experience with this style of gearbox in trucks. The use of the Roadranger is declining as more new European based trucks enter the market.
If you would like to remove the automatic/synchromesh condition from your licence, we can do so. Make an enquiry: 02 97213588
If you drive manual cars, the recommended amount of time to just pass the test would be 8+ hours.
If you drive only automatic cars, the recommended amount of time to pass the test would be 16+ hours.
DO NOT try to do this in less than 4 hours without practice on the real thing. You are only lying to yourself.

What are RTOs (Registered Training Organisations)?
In order to get around this requirement, non-RTO driving schools "partner" with RMS approved RTOs in order to participate in HVCBA and provide heavy vehicle licencing services. A full list of RMS approved RTOs can be found on their website.
Where is the training conducted?
